In 2008, Macau started a series of splendid coins
dedicated to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The latest
additions to the highly popular and artistic coins are
those dedicated to the Year of the Rooster.
Struck with the mintage of 8 000 pieces worldwide, this
coin is a 1 oz. piece of silver with a beautiful proof finish
and striking vivid colors.
The obverse of the coin features the detailed image
of the St. Dominic’s Church. Located within the Historic
Center of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
the church is one of Macau’s oldest historical
structures, built in 1587.
The image comes surrounded by three inscriptions
standing for the name of the building in English, Chinese
and Portuguese.
The centerpiece of the reverse is the outline of a
magnificent rooster, accompanied by blooms of rosy
Celosia cristata, also known as cockscomb. The
name cockscomb was given to this flower due to its
similarity to the comb of the rooster.
The left side of the coin reverse with the brilliant
proof shine of pure .999 silver contains several
inscriptions in English and Chinese indicating the
face value of the coin, its issuing country and year.
